About Cataract

All About Cataract and Its Treatment

As we age, our eyes naturally undergo changes that can lead to cataract disease. A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens, which can cause blurry vision and reduced colour perception. This condition is often associated with ageing but can also be caused by eye injuries, medications, and certain medical conditions. Fortunately, advanced cataract surgery is a safe and effective treatment for removing cataracts.

During cataract surgery, a small incision is made in the eye, and a technique called phacoemulsification also referred to as laser in layman’s terms, is used to break up the cloudy lens before it is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. With quick recovery time and improved vision within days after the procedure, laser surgery has become a popular choice for those who want to improve their quality of life.

As mentioned earlier, cataracts are commonly caused by ageing. However, other factors that can contribute to the development of cataracts include:

Cataracts can cause a number of symptoms, all of which can impact your quality of life. These symptoms may include:

Treatment and Care

At Krishnanetralaya, we provide comprehensive care for cataracts, ensuring a seamless journey from diagnosis to recovery.

Diagnosis:

Visual Acuity Test: An AutoRefractometer and Vision Chart are used to test your vision in a Visual Acuity Test. If your vision remains poor even after wearing corrective glasses, it may indicate the presence of cataracts.

Slit Lamp Exam:
To determine if there are signs of cataracts, your eye doctor will use a slit lamp exam, which is a type of microscope that allows for magnified inspection of the eye's natural lens.

Retinal exam:
Your eye specialist may also perform a retinal exam by dilating your eyes to ensure that your retina is healthy. This is important because if there are any issues with the retina, vision may not fully improve even after cataract surgery.

Procedure:

Advanced laser technology has significantly improved the accuracy and effectiveness of cataract surgery procedures. During the surgery, a surgeon removes the cloudy lens from the eye and replaces it with a clear artificial one.

The procedure typically takes only 10-20 minutes and is usually performed under local anaesthesia. Most patients can resume normal activities within a few days after the surgery with proper follow-up care.

Post-Op Care:

Following cataract surgery, it is crucial to follow your doctor's post-surgery instructions for optimal healing and recovery. Attend all follow-up appointments to monitor progress and ensure proper healing. While rare, potential risks and side effects associated with cataract surgery, such as infection or inflammation, should be monitored closely.

To prevent further damage or complications after surgery, use eye protection such as sunglasses. With successful cataract surgery, patients can enjoy improved vision and a better quality of life.

Types Of Cataract

Nuclear Sclerotic Cataracts

Nuclear Sclerotic Cataracts are a type of cataract that occurs when the central portion of the crystalline lens becomes hard and yellowed over time, causing vision to become blurry or cloudy. They are a common type of age-related cataract and can make it difficult to see objects clearly, particularly at a distance. People with Nuclear Sclerotic Cataracts can face problems in night driving as well as difficulty in distinguishing colours.

Cortical Cataracts

Cortical cataracts are a type of cataract that develops in the outer layer of the eye’s lens. They commonly begin as wedge-shaped opacities or white, opaque regions that migrate inward towards the lens’s centre. As the cataract progresses, it may cause glare, halos surrounding lights, and impaired contrast sensitivity, making it difficult to see in low light or discriminate between things that are similar in colour or brightness.

Posterior Subcapsular Cataracts

Posterior subcapsular cataracts are types of cataracts that form on the posterior surface of the eye’s lens. They usually begin as tiny, opaque spots and gradually expand to encompass a greater piece of the lens. This type of cataract is more common in young people than cortical or nuclear sclerotic cataracts. The rate of progression varies, although it is faster than in nuclear sclerosis.

FAQs

Cataract surgery is a medical procedure that removes the cloudy lens of the eye (cataract) and replaces it with a clear artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). It is a highly effective and safe surgery performed to restore clear vision and improve quality of life. The procedure is typically done on an outpatient basis and involves minimal downtime.

While cataract surgery is generally safe, like any medical procedure, it has potential risks and disadvantages, including:

  1. Temporary discomfort or mild irritation in the eye after the surgery.
  2. Rare complications such as infection, swelling, or bleeding.
  3. Possible development of a secondary cataract (posterior capsule opacification), which can be treated with a simple laser procedure.
  4. Dependence on glasses or contact lenses for certain tasks post-surgery, in some cases.

These risks are minimal when the surgery is performed by experienced surgeons and with proper post-operative care.

Cataracts primarily develop due to aging, as proteins in the lens of the eye break down and form cloudy patches. Other contributing factors include:

  1. Prolonged UV exposure without proper eye protection.
  2. Medical conditions such as diabetes.
  3. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
  4. Trauma or injury to the eye.
  5. Family history of cataracts.
  6. Use of certain medications, such as corticosteroids, over a long period.

After cataract surgery, it is advised to wear dark glasses whenever you are outdoors for at least 1-2 weeks. This helps protect your eyes from bright light, dust, and harmful UV rays, ensuring faster recovery. Your doctor may recommend continuing to use UV-protective sunglasses even after the recovery period for long-term eye health.

Currently, cataracts cannot be cured without surgery. While certain lifestyle changes, such as wearing UV-protective glasses and eating a nutrient-rich diet, can slow the progression of cataracts, surgery is the only effective treatment to remove the clouded lens and restore vision.
