#CataractSurgery is done in day-care which means you go back home the same day. You won’t be able to drive so make sure you have someone to drive you home after the surgery. There are some dos and don’ts to follow for a few weeks to get the best outcome from your cataract surgery.
Activities you can do after the cataract surgery
- You can eat or drink anything that you want and have a normal veg/non-veg diet as usual.
- You can sleep on both the sides and go for gentle walks.
- You can watch television, read newspaper and books from the next day.
- You can resume kitchen work gradually in 3-4 days.
Important dos after the cataract surgery
- Your Cataract surgeon will prescribe some eye drops and medicines, make sure you follow the instructions properly. These are important to prevent infection and inflammation and ensure proper healing.
- Your doctor will also likely ask you to wear an eye patch the day of surgery.
Don’ts for 1 week after the surgery
- Avoid a face wash. You may use a wet towel for wiping the face.
- Do not take a head bath. Bathing below the neck can be resumed from the next day onwards. After a week, you may take someone’s help to wash the hair with your head reclining backwards.
Don’ts For 3 weeks after the surgery
- Do not splash water directly into the operated eye
- Do not rub or apply pressure on the operated eye
- Do not do any heavy work like lifting bucket of water or suitcase or shifting heavy objects or furniture or any exercise like yoga, pranayam, jogging or outdoor sports
- Do not use any cloth, handkerchief, towel, dupatta, or stole for cleaning the eye. Any discharge accumulated during the night in the corner of the eye or along the eyelashes may be gently wiped using sterile moist cotton swabs (Boil the cotton in water for 10 minutes, squeeze the cotton when cooled)
- Avoid exposure of eyes to dust, wind & bright sun. Wear protective sunglasses outdoors.
Other things to note
- A foreign body sensation, itching and little watering is normal for a week after surgery.
- It is possible that sometimes after the operation colors may look brighter and glary which is normal, and it settles in due course of time.
- Till the time you get your final prescription for spectacles power you can use your old reading glasses or can put plain glass (zero powered) on the operated side in your spectacle frame.
- Post-operative vision is variable in the 1st week. It takes 2-4 weeks before best vision is achieved. Glasses are prescribed after 3 weeks of surgery in case of Phacoemulsification (9-12 weeks in conventional surgery).
- In case you experience any increase in redness, watering, pain or any decrease in vision in the operated eye, consult your eye surgeon immediately.
